Rock icon Carlos Santana is a married man again after tying the knot with one of his bandmates in Hawaii over the holidays. The “Evil Ways” guitarist, 63, wed 51-year-old drummer Cindy Blackman, in a beach-side ceremony on Dec. 19.
Their lavish nuptials were held at the luxury Ritz Carlton Resort on Maui island, Hawaii in front of 180 guests including comedian George Lopez and musicians Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter.
And the newlyweds weren’t prepared to let a little rain ruin their big day.
“The weather was kind of iffy, so we said, ‘Let’s just do it inside,” Carlos told PEOPLE Wednesday. “Because no matter where we did it, the sun was shining……Cindy is a match with everything that I am, from fire of passion to vulnerability. Everything tastes better when you share it with your soul mate.”
Carlos and Cindy actually embraced the unfortunate weather conditions and used them as part of the ceremony, carrying out a handwashing ritual using the rain water and releasing a crate of white doves to help commemorate the occasion.
“Rain represents mercy,” says Cindy, best known for her work with “Fly Away” star Lenny Kravitz. “It couldn’t have been more beautiful. We absolved ourselves of all things past and all things future except the two of us. It felt so clearing to do that.”
The bride wore a custom-made silk dress from the Zurich boutique Zoro for the big day.
Carlos is due to start a residency at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas next Wednesday.
This is the second marriage for the former Santana frontman. He split from his first wife Deborah Santana in 2007, ending 34 years of marriage.
