Given his location, I'm guessing (hoping) that is $118k Brazilian.

    I wish! 185k Brazilian. 118k USD.

I was just kidding though. If I ever had 120k to spend on a car, it wouldn't be a Chevrolet, I guarantee that. :D

Why buy a 3G iPhone, when there are 4G phones available ?

Because it is cheaper? Which it in some ways is. But if you include the two year plan in the total cost, then you really have been screwed.
And it's already old today, and after two years, it's even older.

All of this negative AT&T press is fantastic for me :D

I have had AT&T since they were called bellsouth and it was a car phone in a leather bag, attached to an antenna on the back of the family car. I have never had problems. Obviously 'back in the day' it hardly worked anywhere, but especially now it works everywhere, I never drop calls, I can always be reached. In fact, all the way back in 2002 I dropped my landline in favor of a Cingular (now AT&T) cellphone. I had sprint for a while, that was a bad experience, it was only for two years of a contract before I switched back to AT&T.

So, all of this junk just gives me all kinds of cool free stuff like this, when I was perfectly happen to being with LOL.

I love all the 'worst carrier ever' comments. Do none of you realize VZW is already charging that much?

I don't know about VZW, but with AT&T, 80% of my calls are dropped multiple times. I had to get a TMobile + Nokia to use for business. I'm having iPhone for use with WiFi network.

Well, this is macrumors and i try to stay away from economic theories, but you asked for it, so here we go:
Monopolies cause "allocative deadweight loss" (although its main argument applies towards state-owned enterprises)
    What does that mean?

In a competitive market, producers dont have the freedom to set a price because the rival can always undercut them until the point where lowering the price will cause in a loss.
BUT the monopolist firm can decide the price it charges by varying the quantity it produces, so it will produce only up to the quantity where its profit is maximized. UNDER NORMAL CIRCUMSTANCES, the level of output is lower than the socially optimal one, which is where the max price a consumer is willing to pay is the same as the minimum price that the producer requires in order not to lose money.
When the amount produced is LESS than the socially optimal quantity, it means not serving some consumers who are perfectly willing to pay MORE than the minimum price that the producer requires but who are unwilling to bear the price at which the monopoly firm can max its profit. The unfulfilled desire of those neglected consumers is the social cost of monopoly.

So basically, monopolies will start losing more money when they start raising the price since consumers will either 1) not be able to access such services (since they will only make the MIN amount for MAX price and by using calculus, you would rather spend a little more in the amount produced and make a little less profit rather than having an EXACT amount although you would make the best profit IF you sold ALL items) or 2) consumers will just stop using it since cell phone devices are not a NECESSITY but instead a WANT. do you think you will pay whatever cellphone company if the price exceeds a certain comfort zone in your income bracket? you wont.

Furthermore, I will take it one more step. Monopolies can be good. If you look at the Mexican carrier, Telcel. The year Telcel was monopolized by Carlos Slim (riches man in the world now) coverage in Mexico grew more than it did in the hands of the state. According to the "monopoly=bad" argument, service in Mexico should have dropped in every other city that is not important in Mexico's economy while service should have exploded in cities such as Mexico City and Puebla. No, it exploded in the main cities while it also exploded with the whole country

In conclusion, monopolies are only dangerous IF the monopoly is a necessity based. i.e. lets say one man owned the whole united states food supply. Then yes, monopolies would be the worst. But not cell phone companies, cmon if monopolies were SOO good for the company why would Bell even break up his own company? just for the lulz? I dont think so. Because the government told him so? I certainly dont believe it since Bell probably would have had the power to lobby his way out and in case nothing worked he couldve just brought it up to the Supreme Court.

Anyways, enough with the economics jargon. Enjoy your economics class :P

    I like you.

I kept working to be the meanest member but no one ever voted for me for that. :( ;)

I switched as soon as the website went live. Yes, you remove the original messaging option and select the Messaging with Any Mobile.

Great, thanks for the help. i will switch over today!

I still need to call LAN lines for work and A-list for FamilyTalk is now available on the Nation 700 plan. I switched today by calling ATT but online they are not letting it go through yet. They said this will work online soon, but calling 611 they are setting it up today for me. Went from $89.99 to $69.99, saving $20 per month and keeping my A-list!

I also need to keep A-list for the same reason. i might also make the switch from 1400 to 700 if i can get unlimited M2M and A-list.

It depends on how you compare android to iOS. I personally get a full day out of my android phone. Thats with texting all day, one class where i am streaming peers papers the entire time. I am on wifi the entire time. I play Gameboy games for much of the day when i am on the bus. I listen to music when i am going around time on my long board. In all my phone is never in real sleep mode. When I first got the phone my battery life was about an two hours to two hours and a half, then I learned to shut off apps. I love the user interface more then apple. Yeah it lags occaisonally but i get to have all my lovely widgets where i can easily access them. I can see what my next apointment is just by unlocking my phone. I can read an email simply by swiping left. I can send, read a text message just by swiping right. I love it has every thing I need. If it doesn't work you it won't work but for over a million of us it works perfectly. iOS is not Android and Android is not iOS if it works for you it works for you no need to bash the other. I like iOS I just can't see my self using it as a phone OS.

The beauty of iOS is that it is more then just a phone OS. Flexible to run on Apple TVs, iPod Touches, iPhones and iPads. I also like the fact that Apple designed there application multi-tasking so that developers could decide how heavy they needed the multi-tasking to be. This gives the advantage to using the battery as efficiently as possible. I really do not like how difficult Google made it to kill off background tasks by burying the stop mechanism several levels under the setup.

Two and half hours of battery life is pretty bad and that is exactly what I am getting out the Andriod phones I use and work. I do not have that problem with the iPhone. I can do my work using the iPhone all day and not have to hook it to the charger or worry about killing off back ground tasks.

I can appreciate you not wanting to get into a bashing contest. You do come across a little on the "I am going to set these guys straight" attitude, though.

I will say this, I highly doubt that Android would have anywhere near the saturation that it does now if it were not for the BOGO phone deals that have been going on since Andriod came out. Apple is competing with LG, Google, Motorola, Samsung and HTC all of which are putting out several models of Andriod phones a month and doing the BOGO deals on most of them. I for one am glad Apple does not do that. For one thing BOGO hurts the resale value of the phones. Also, a lot of the manufactures modify the Andriod OS specific to the manufacturers needs. This creates the problem where you have to rely on the manufacturer for the update.

Apple makes it easy. You know when the refresh cycle happens and there is consistency to how the updates are done and it is controlled by one company. Google has created an inconsistent experience for the users. I can tell you first hand that not one of the various Andriod phones I use at work has a consistence interface from one another. I can easily pickup my wifes iPod touch or my iPad or the iPhones at work and they all have the same consistent feel and look to the interface.

These movie and music execs just keep on going after the wrong people. Those of us who legally purchase audio and/or video content from iTunes are the law-abiding folk. If we were interested in pirating, we wouldn't be buying from iTunes when there are plenty of shady sources for the content.
I don't have the solution for their problem [piracy], but I know that penalizing the paying folks is only going cut off revenue for them and create more pirates in the long run.

As has probably been said in the forums before, $25/hour is on the low side.

Backing up a little and going slightly off topic: being passionate about something and being able to make a living at it are two totally different things. I think all creatives like ourselves should take a mandatory 6 month business class before we start our businesses. If you have bills to pay as most of us do, you gotta figure out how much you need per month and then how many clients @ x dollars per hour you need. If your living costs are low and you're just starting out then you can pretty much work for any amount just to get the experience but when you get older and you have a mortgage, car payment, kids ($$$$$$) you many end up working for someone else.

Also, now-a-days, with the power of computers and software it's pretty easy for someone not so technical to sign up for a free blog such as Tumblr and Wordpress, grab a theme for $50 and have a website up and running for next to nothing. The internet has been growing at a steady rate, even in the economic downturn (big company fires techies and they start on online company) BUT when you have too many players in any market, the middle of the market falls out. i.e. you end up haviong folks working for $10-15per hour and others working for $100. This is not good for any of us!

Also, working for ourselves we're more lightly to be tempted to tell a client to piss off as we're the boss so remember to keep your cool and be professional at all times even if the client is a no good tire kicking ^*&^* face!! And for the love of dog, make every client sign a contract where you lay out exactly what and sometimes more importantly WHAT YOU ARE NOT going to be doing for them. Client is being an ass, gently remind the client of what is written in the contract. Client is being a real ass; off to small claims court you go - one of the only decent things about the legal system in this country is that you do have certain rights compared to say other places on the globe!

OK, putting my predisposed negative Brit attitude aside and yes this disjointed rant is now coming to an end :) Nothing is stopping you from getting a book on selling, yes, we've all got to be sales people or teaming up with other to get some sweet deals!

(And as all good teachers will tell your, I've neglected most of the above in my Web Design Business to my own detriment! I have also never taken a client to court in 10 years of web design but I did think one was a no good tire kicking ^*&^* face though!)

    Cheers

God I hate Notes- it's an operating system on top of an operating system. It's databases are just a step up from Access and to be honest - it's a pig.

I've been forced to use the piece a crap for over 5 years (I'm a consultant) and it had brought me great pleasure to help large scale enterprises move away from this overstuffed piece of crap.

Is Exchange any better - yes and no - in general they both are crappy. The biggest advantage of Notes is that their CALs (licenses) are so cheep compared to Exchange/Outlook.

When I start looking for a new job - the first question I'll ask is which Universal Messaging Platform have you deployed in your Enterprise? If they answer "Notes" I'll know the following about their organziation:

    1. They care more about the dollar than about usability and employee satisfaction
    2. The VP of IT is probably sleeping with the IBM rep
    3. The business only uses it because they don't know any better (they've been there too long and have never used anything other than Notes and AOL).
    4. They think that Notes databases are cool and hip and truly believe Access is an enterprise level database
    5. And finally, they are so damn stupid they probably have Lotus 123 and Word Perfect as their "Office Suite"

"Save me lord from these fools"

Did he give a reason why he wants to... Ie they are going to a club and are going to be home late

Patents like this are so annoying

    http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO1&Sect2=HITOFF&d=PALL&p=1&u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsrchnum.htm&r=1&f=G&l=50&s1=7,069,055.PN.&OS=PN/7,069,055&RS=PN/7,069,055

So basically Samsung has patented: A clock with multiple time zones in a mobile phone.

How on Earth is a patent like that supposed to promote innovation?
(the original reason we got the patent system back some centuries ago)

Also, this one just makes me want to tear my hair out

    http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO1&Sect2=HITOFF&d=PALL&p=1&u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsrchnum.htm&r=1&f=G&l=50&s1=7,009,626.PN.&OS=PN/7,009,626&RS=PN/7,009,626

Apple will surely manage this, but what about the independent developer with no huge pile of cash to throw at some lawyers? THAT is the problem here.. :(
