Carrie Fisher Jenny Craig Spokesmodel
Add Star Wars star Carrie Fisher to the growing list of out-of-shape celebs slimming down with the help of health and wellness company Jenny Craig.
Fisher, who rocketed to fame playing Princess Leia in George Lucas’ 1977 sci-fi epic, has set out to lose 30 pounds as the latest celebrity spokeswoman for the weight-management giant.
“A day comes when you can no longer face not wanting to leave the house because you don’t like the way you look,” Fisher, 54, said in a statement Wednesday. “A day comes when you want to stop apologizing for it. When you want to make a decision to live the rest of your life in a healthy way. I haven’t been able to enjoy what otherwise is a good part of my life because so much of what’s on my mind is about my weight.”
Fisher, who stands at just five-foot-one, is determined to wear a closetful of clothes that no longer fit since she ate her way up to 180 pounds. When her father, ’50s singer Eddie Fisher, died in September, Carrie turned to Haagen-Dazs ice cream for comfort. It wasn’t long before she and her waistline fell out of favor.
“I’m fat,” the Wishful Drinking funnygal tells PEOPLE. “All the clothes in my closet belong to another chick. They have to make a new alphabet for my bra size.”
We blogging folk haven’t helped Carrie accept her so-called frumpy form. Carrie’s still able summon tears when she recalls some of the biting criticism her appearance has received on blogs and online message boards. (Looks to the left. Looks to the right. Wasn’t me!) These days, the girl who used to regularly shag Star Wars groupies at fan conventions can’t give it away.
“I look on the Internet and they say, ‘Whatever happened to Carrie Fisher? She used to be so hot and now she looks like Elton John. I was really hurt.”
On a lighter note, things appear to be turning around for Carrie. Fisher’s already lost 12 lbs. on the weight-management program and will begin appearing in a new campaign of Jenny ads premiering next month.
Previous Jenny Craig spokespeople include Valerie Bertinelli, Queen Latifah, Phylicia Rashad, Sara Rue, Nicole Sullivan, Kirstie Alley (OK! Bad example…), and Jason Alexander.
